National Tax Agency Virtual Asset Leak Incident, Investigation Officially Launched... Security Concerns Once Again Draw Attention

The Virtual Asset Leak Incident at the National Tax Service has been confirmed to have occurred twice, and a comprehensive investigation is underway. The incident was caused by a mistake at the National Tax Service that led to the leakage of mnemonic codes, which play an important role in virtual asset transactions, drawing significant attention.

The Cyber Terrorism Investigation Team of the Police Department has decided to elevate this case from an initial internal investigation to a formal investigation. Although the hacker who stole the virtual assets from the National Tax Service submitted a confession indicating an intention to return the assets, it has been confirmed that the virtual assets have been transferred to other accounts. Authorities are now pursuing other suspects.

The incident originated on the 26th of last month, when the National Tax Service issued a press release after seizing virtual assets from delinquent taxpayers. During this process, the mnemonic, a critical security element, was leaked, and subsequently, the virtual assets in the electronic wallet are suspected to have been stolen by hackers.

The leaked virtual asset is PRTG coin, valued at approximately 6.9 billion Korean won. However, due to the current lack of trading channels, it is difficult to liquidate, so the actual loss may be minimal. Nevertheless, as a large-scale virtual asset leak, the investigation cannot rule out the possibility of additional losses.

This trend may lead to future discussions on strengthening virtual asset security and improving related systems. The information security systems of government agencies like the National Tax Service need urgent enhancement.
