According to Sensor Tower's latest State of AI 2026 report, ChatGPT's global market share in AI assistant apps fell below 50% for the first time in May, sliding to 46.4%, though it retains the highest monthly active users at approximately 1.1 billion. Google Gemini's share rose to 27.7%, while Anthropic Claude climbed to 10.3%. The report noted OpenAI's recent U.S. Department of Defense contract triggered a wave of app uninstalls.

Claude led competitors in subscription conversion rate at 13%, signaling a competitive shift in the AI assistant market as users explore alternatives alongside ChatGPT's dominance.
