Quant Hedge Funds Suffer Worst 5-Day Decline Since December 2023, Down 3.1% Last Week

According to Goldman Sachs, quant hedge funds globally recorded their worst five-day performance since December 2023 early last week, with cumulative losses of 3.1%, including a 1% single-day decline on Monday. The prime brokerage department sent a letter to clients noting that losses concentrated in short positions, particularly affecting high-correlation trading and momentum strategies. On a Z-score basis—a statistical measure of deviation from average—the performance decline marked the largest deviation for systemic long-short hedge funds since December 2023. Despite the pullback, quant funds remained up 11.3% year-to-date as of Goldman's letter date, and the Nasdaq Composite fell 4.6% and the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index dropped 7.94% the same week.
