By the way, there is a deep irony here that most people miss.
Gold is rare for a very fundamental reason. In the normal life cycle of a star, elements can only be fused up to iron. Beyond iron, fusion no longer releases energy. It consumes energy. That breaks the delicate balance inside the star between gravity pulling inward and radiation pressure pushing outward.
As long as fusion produces energy, the star can sustain itself. But once it builds up iron in its core, that process stops. The star can no longer support itself, gravity takes over, and the core collapses. What follows is a catastr

I'm leaving for the Las Vegas Bitcoin conference. I will have several copies of the Physics of Bitcoin book.
Look for the Minotaur booth and come to meet me there to get signed copies.

By its very nature, a Ponzi scheme grows exponentially.
Each participant must recruit new participants to sustain returns.
That implies doubling at a roughly constant pace.
Exponentials require fuel.
And anything that grows exponentially eventually collapses when that fuel runs out.
In that sense, most traditional assets—equities like the S&P 500 and NASDAQ, even gold in certain regimes—are tied to exponential dynamics and therefore similar to a Ponzi scheme.
Companies also grow exponentially, saturate, and die.
Most of them within few years, and none of them survive more than 100 years.

We should all be more like Hal.
I liked him before watching Finding Satoshi, I like him more now.
If he is part of who Satoshi is (and he was in more than one way) that is great.
Bitcoin is very much like Hal.

In my book "The Physics of Bitcoin" I have an entire section on Transhumanism and its connection to Bitcoin.
It is interesting than in the documentary "Finding Satoshi" Transhumanism is mentioned as one of the possible ingredients for understanding who Satoshi was.

Today there is no real excuse for remaining ignorant. Learn, deliberately, consistently, about everything that matters.
Make the time, even if your days are long and exhausting. Especially then.
Instead of drifting into mindless distraction, choose something meaningful. Study something beautiful. Build understanding, one day at a time.
Knowledge compounds. And one day, it may be the very thing that lifts you beyond the life you thought you were confined to.

This graph is also very interesting. The upper panel shows the oscillation of the local slopes. We are taking the different with the global value 5.7.
You can see clearly the oscillations are equally distributed above and below 0.
The panel below extracts the log periodic oscillations of n and show the main harmonic being dominant up to they year 2020, when the interference from other harmonics becomes large and the dominant frequency is lost in these higher frequencies.
This is what created confusion in interpreting the quasi-4 years peaks in the last cycles.

What this chart is
This is a time-frequency picture of Bitcoin's entire price history, from July 2010 to April 2026. The horizontal axis is log of time since Bitcoin genesis. The vertical axis is frequency, measured in "cycles per log-decade" of time, shown on a log scale. Red means a strong oscillation is present; blue means very little. The four black stars mark the four real bull-market tops: June 2011, December 2013, December 2017, and April 2021.
What a log-periodic cycle means
Normal cycles repeat every fixed number of days. Stock market business cycles, for example, show up at the same

Here with locations of major tops (black stars).

You can see the blobs of the signal (yellow and red color regions) align with the black stars.

The persistence of the main harmonic is very evident (red band at the bottom).

Another remarkable graph.
This figure shows a spectrogram of Bitcoin’s price, expressed in log–frequency and log–time coordinates.
In this representation, the log-periodic harmonics appear as straight lines because they are constant in this transformed space. In linear time, those same components would stretch out and appear as decaying structures, which is why they are harder to identify in a standard spectrogram.
Notice the strong red band concentrated around the lowest fundamental frequency. This is clear evidence of a persistent signal in the price dynamics at that specific log-periodic fr

It is interesting that in the im(f), real(f) plane the oscillation look periodic when plotted in log(Price), same way that they look periodic when plotted in the Im(f) vs log(time).
