Claude experiences another major outage! Disrupted twice within 24 hours, with over 4,000 user reports questioning stability

Generative AI tools are rapidly permeating development and creative workflows, but when systems are unstable, the impact is immediate and severe. Anthropic’s Claude AI experienced consecutive service outages on March 2 and 3, sparking complaints from users worldwide. According to monitoring data, daily reports in the U.S. exceeded 4,000, and numerous questions flooded Reddit and other community platforms.

As Claude’s user base surged and it topped the App Store charts, these two outages within 24 hours prompted a reassessment of AI infrastructure resilience and reliability.

On March 3, the service was interrupted again, with error rates soaring and issues not fully resolved.

The latest outage occurred at 3:15 UTC on March 3 (11:15 AM Taiwan time). Anthropic’s official status page showed multiple core services experiencing “elevated errors,” including:

  • claude.ai web interface
  • Claude Code
  • Cowork
  • Platform services themselves

As of 6:59 UTC (2:59 PM Taiwan time), the official status still indicated that the issue was “under investigation” with no full fix announced.

According to Downdetector, reports in the U.S. peaked at over 4,000, with hundreds in India. Users mainly reported:

  • About 39% for chat failures
  • About 36% for app anomalies
  • About 15% for website connection issues

The previous outage on March 2 had nearly 2,000 reports. The less than 24-hour gap between incidents has significantly shaken market confidence.

Reddit users angrily criticized: “Paid Max users are also rate-limited.”

Communities like r/ClaudeAI and r/claude saw a flood of discussions on March 3, with many paying users complaining that even with low usage, they encountered “rate limit” errors.

One user noted that during the outage, their usage was only 31%, yet they were still blocked. Some users on the $100/month plan pointed out that after multiple outages in recent days, they received no compensation, customer service was slow, and complaints were ignored.

The overall sentiment centers on three key issues:

  1. Is there a stability difference between paid and free services?
  2. Can infrastructure expansion keep pace with growth?
  3. Should there be more transparent compensation or SLA mechanisms?

As user reliance increases, the saying “Claude went down, I went down” has become common.

Beyond technical complaints, many community posts are half-joking, half-exasperated. One developer wrote, “Claude is down, and I’m down too,” describing the frustration of suddenly losing a critical programming assistant.

Common error messages include:

  • Login failures
  • HTTP errors
  • “This isn’t working right now” messages
  • Severe performance drops

Some users suggest that the API remains relatively stable and recommend switching to API or local alternatives during peak traffic. However, for users who rely on Claude as their primary interface, avoiding impact remains difficult.

In fact, Claude has recently experienced explosive growth. Free users increased by over 60% since January, and paid subscribers doubled since October, at one point surpassing OpenAI’s ChatGPT and topping the US App Store’s free charts.

While rapid expansion offers market advantages, it also tests infrastructure capacity. A sudden surge in traffic strains server scaling, load balancing, and error management systems.

The Reality of AI Infrastructure

Currently, there are no signs of permanent outages or service termination; issues are temporary disruptions. But for users integrating AI into daily workflows, “temporary” still means productivity loss.

As generative AI shifts from experimental tools to essential infrastructure, market expectations for stability are rising. This is not just a model capability race but also a contest in cloud architecture, resource management, and system resilience.

In a highly competitive AI industry, maintaining stable operations amid explosive growth will be a key factor in success or failure. Users can monitor real-time updates via the official status page, but the longer-term challenge lies in ensuring AI tools achieve the reliability of “critical infrastructure” level systems.
