Google announces that it is integrating shopping features into AI search and Gemini, allowing users to view AI responses while simultaneously seeing products and completing purchases. This is seen as Google’s move to directly monetize AI usage scenarios. Vidhya Srinivasan, Vice President of Google Ads and E-commerce, stated in an interview that they are currently testing new advertising models within Google Search’s “AI Mode,” enabling retailers and brands to offer products directly within AI response scenarios for consumer purchase.

These new ad formats will allow users to see products and purchase options while using AI search. Srinivasan commented:

“We’re not just moving ads into the AI search experience; we’re redefining what advertising means.”

Google also announced that users can now purchase items directly from Etsy and Wayfair within Gemini. Additionally, Google has launched a new feature called “Direct Offers” in AI Mode, enabling brands to directly offer discounts to potential consumers.

Industry trends show that OpenAI has recently begun testing in the U.S., introducing advertising mechanisms into ChatGPT to target users who have not yet converted to paid subscriptions, aiming to expand revenue sources. Meanwhile, ChatGPT and competitors like Perplexity AI are rolling out new AI features to try to change how users interact with online shopping.

AI Shopping Paves the Way for the Future, Privacy and Consumer Risks Under Scrutiny

Earlier this year, Google started integrating AI agents into shopping experiences and launched a new mechanism to standardize payment processes and digital identity verification. Srinivasan explained that Google has partnered with companies like Shopify, Target, and Walmart to support consumers in checking out directly within Google’s AI products.

She described this as paving the way for a future where business experiences are seamless and AI-led, allowing AI to handle the shopping process on behalf of users.

However, Google’s push for AI shopping features has also attracted attention from Washington. U.S. Senator Elizabeth Warren expressed concerns that such features could pose consumer privacy risks and potentially lead users to higher spending. Google responded by stating that the company prohibits merchants on its platform from displaying prices higher than those on their official websites for the same products.
