Vitalik Proposes Conditional AI Pause Agreement Between Opposing Factions

According to PANews, Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin outlined a compromise approach to AI superintelligence debates on July 11. He identified two opposing views: one faction believes superintelligence will inevitably arrive before 2040 and must be controlled immediately, while the other views AI as ordinary technology and opposes any pause as a mechanism for human control.

Vitalik proposed a middle-ground solution where both sides could predefine extreme scenarios (such as pandemics or mass unemployment) that would trigger AI development pauses if they occur. If these scenarios do not materialize, development would proceed according to the opposing faction's approach. He also criticized large AI companies promoting an "open source is harmful" narrative, calling it fundamentally a concentration of power.
