U.S. Justice Department Intervenes in xAI Data Center Case, Confirms Military Deployment of Grok Gov for Combat Operations

According to Beating, the U.S. Department of Justice filed a motion with the Mississippi Federal Court on June 17, requesting dismissal of the NAACP's environmental lawsuit against xAI's data center. In their testimony, the Department of Justice and Department of Defense confirmed for the first time that the U.S. military has deployed a customized version of Grok Gov in classified military networks for planning actual military strikes against Iran. The federal government classified the data center's computing power as equivalent to a modern military manufacturing facility, arguing that cutting power supply would jeopardize national and military defense security.

The Pentagon signed a $200 million procurement contract with xAI in 2025 for the government version of Grok Gov, according to the filing. Deputy Chief Digital and AI Officer Cameron Stanley confirmed that Grok Gov has been deployed as part of the Maven intelligence system in classified networks. During the February 2026 U.S.-Iran conflict, the Maven system delivered over 2,000 munitions to 2,000 targets within 96 hours.
