Uber Burns Full-Year AI Budget in 4 Months; Sam Altman Flags Token Costs as 'Huge Issue'

According to Tom's Hardware, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said in an interview last week that AI token costs have become a "huge issue" for enterprises. He noted that companies are now reporting they exhausted their entire 2026 budgets within Q1, prompting a shift in how organizations approach AI spending. The Information reported that Uber Technologies exhausted its annual AI budget allocation within four months due to employee and application usage. Altman added that OpenAI is working on models and solutions to help customers achieve more value at lower costs. Jensen Huang, CEO of Nvidia, offered a contrasting view, stating in March that higher token consumption signals productivity gains; he suggested engineers should ideally consume tokens worth at least 50% of their salaries.
