SpaceX Plans Orbital AI Data Center Tests by Late 2027, Accelerating Timeline on Nvidia Chips

According to recent investor presentations, SpaceX plans to launch demonstration missions for orbital AI data centers by late 2027, accelerating the timeline ahead of earlier expectations for tests beginning in 2028. The first AI satellite is expected to use Nvidia chips with compute capacity comparable to a high-end Nvidia GB300 rack, according to reports.

The concept uses satellites carrying high-performance AI chips, solar power systems and thermal-management equipment to perform computation in orbit. SpaceX executives have presented the project as a way to address growing constraints in terrestrial AI infrastructure, including power availability and grid pressure. The company aims to validate whether AI computing hardware can operate reliably in orbit before any broader commercial rollout.
