Odyssey Marine Seeks to Mine Titanium and Zirconium Off Virginia Coast; BOEM Opens 30-Day Public Comment Period

According to the U.S. Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM), Florida-based Odyssey Marine Exploration is seeking to extract titanium, zirconium, and other critical minerals from the seafloor off Virginia's coast. BOEM is currently evaluating the company's application and will open a 30-day public comment period to discuss the impacts and benefits of allowing deep-sea mining on Virginia's outer continental shelf.

The Center for Biological Diversity has criticized the proposal, cautioning that deep-sea mining could harm wildlife in ways scientists do not fully understand.
