Nvidia and TSMC Ship Spectrum-X Co-Packaged Optics Switch, Cutting Power to 9 Watts

According to Focus Taiwan, Nvidia and TSMC began shipping the Spectrum-X co-packaged optics (CPO) switch to select partners on June 3 at GTC Taipei. The switch uses silicon photonics integrated on the same chip package as the application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC), replacing traditional pluggable transceivers. This design reduces electrical loss and cuts interface power from approximately 30 watts to as low as 9 watts, while delivering up to 400 terabits per second of aggregate bandwidth. TSMC contributed its COUPE silicon photonics packaging platform and SoIC 3D chip stacking technology to the project.
