According to Kalshi, The Jeffrey bar in Manhattan's Upper East Side launched a promotion during Game 1 of the NBA Finals on June 2, offering free drinks if the New York Knicks won. To manage the financial risk, the bar hedged by purchasing $5,000 worth of "Knicks win" contracts on prediction market Kalshi.
If the Knicks won, the bar's losses from free drinks would be offset by profits from the contract. If the Knicks lost, the bar avoided paying out free drinks and benefited from increased customer traffic, losing only the $5,000 hedging cost. Bar owner Andy Freedman noted the approach allowed them to offer bolder promotions while controlling risk.
