Japanese Yen Falls Below 900 Won Against Korean Currency for First Time in 20 Months

According to Seoul forex market data, the Japanese yen-Korean won exchange rate dropped below the 900-won psychological support level on July 24, falling to 100 yen per 895.84 won during intraday trading. This marks the first time the rate has breached this level since November 2024. The decline was primarily driven by Korean won strength rather than yen weakness, with the dollar-won rate also plunging from the 1,550-won level at the start of the month to around 1,465 won. The breakthrough of the 900-won barrier has prompted retail demand for yen conversion to surge. According to Kiwoom Securities, yen conversion application requests increased approximately 88% on July 24 afternoon compared to daily average levels. Market dealers report significant uptick in yen exchange inquiries across major banks.
