Gate News message, April 17 — Japan will provide Sony with up to 60 billion yen (approximately $380 million) to support an image sensor manufacturing plant in Kumamoto, western Japan. Industry Minister Ryosei Akazawa stated the subsidy aims to secure a stable supply of sensors for autonomous driving and physical AI applications.
Sony is a major global supplier of image sensors used in smartphones and other devices, having shipped over 20 billion sensors to date. Image sensors are increasingly critical components for autonomous vehicles and AI-powered robotics.
The Kumamoto facility will be positioned within Japan’s growing semiconductor cluster, located near Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company’s (TSMC) Japan Advanced Semiconductor Manufacturing, Inc. (JASM) project. Sony holds an approximately 6% equity stake in JASM and is collaborating with TSMC on next-generation sensor development.
