IATA Chief Warns Higher Fuel Costs Will Trigger Airline Closures, Industry Consolidation on June 7

According to IATA Director General Willie Walsh, on June 7, surging aviation fuel prices are expected to prompt additional airline closures and industry consolidation in the coming period. Walsh noted that regulatory barriers make a merger between United Airlines and American Airlines unlikely. He added that once Middle East tensions subside, Gulf region carriers and hubs will reclaim market share.
