Greek Shipowners Position Tankers Near Persian Gulf to Capitalize on Strait of Hormuz Reopening

According to Capital Maritime & Trading CEO Evangelos Marinakis, on Tuesday, Greek shipowners have positioned tankers in waters off India and East Africa—approximately three to five days sailing from the Persian Gulf. The move is aimed at capitalizing on high freight rates if the Strait of Hormuz reopens. At least one additional Greek shipowner has deployed vessels in a similar manner, according to a person familiar with the matter. The tanker positioning reflects expectations of elevated shipping costs should the strategically critical waterway resume normal operations.
