Ethereum Core Development May Face Funding Crisis in 3-9 Months as $30M Annual Support Program Ends

According to former Ethereum Foundation member Trent Van Epps, Ethereum core development teams may face a funding crisis within 3 to 9 months following the expiration of the Client Incentive Program (CIP) in April 2026. The four-year CIP, which provided funding to client teams through staking, has ended with no replacement mechanism identified. Maintaining operations for more than 10 client, research, and coordination teams requires approximately $30 million in annual funding. Without sustained financial support, the ecosystem risks losing key talent and experiencing reduced protocol maintenance capacity.
