China's Statistics Bureau Cracks Down on Data Fabrication with Inspections of 6 Provinces and 6 Departments

According to Xinhua News Agency, China's National Bureau of Statistics intensified efforts to combat statistical fraud in 2026. In April, the bureau provided feedback on 2025 routine statistical inspections to 6 provinces and cities as well as 6 central government departments, flagging issues including data inaccuracies in enterprise surveys and quality risks in departmental data. The reviewed regions and departments were required to submit rectification plans within 3 months.

The bureau established 12 inspection groups that began comprehensive inspections of relevant regions and departments in mid-May for 2026 routine statistical audits.
