China Releases First National Framework for Protecting Elderly Workers' Rights, Effective July 1

On May 25, China's Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security and four other agencies released the Interim Regulations on Basic Rights Protection for Elderly Workers (超龄劳动者基本权益保障暂行规定), effective July 1, 2026. The first dedicated regulation of its kind in the country, it establishes employers' and elderly workers' rights and obligations, protecting elderly workers' entitlements to wages, rest and holidays, occupational health and safety, and work-related injury coverage.
