So I had this annoying issue where my calls kept showing up as private to everyone, and honestly it took me way too long to figure out how to remove my number from private mode. My friend kept asking why I was always calling from a private number, and I'm like, I'm not doing that on purpose. Turns out there's a bunch of reasons why this happens.
If you're on Android, the thing is most of this is controlled by your carrier at the network level, not just your phone settings. I had to dig into my Phone app settings, hit the three dots menu, go to Call Settings, and look for Caller ID options. Depending on your phone brand like Samsung or Google, it might be in slightly different spots, but you're basically looking for something that says Show number or Network default. The key is making sure your network actually knows to display your number. If that doesn't work, you can try using USSD codes like dialing *31# which tells your carrier to make your number visible on all calls. If the setting is greyed out, check if Advanced Protection is turned on under Security settings because that can lock down your caller ID options.
For iPhone users on iOS 26, it's actually pretty straightforward now. You go to Settings, tap Apps, find Phone, and toggle on Show My Caller ID. If you've got multiple lines like an eSIM and physical SIM, you gotta do it for each one separately. Sometimes this option doesn't show up if your carrier controls it from their end, which is annoying but happens.
If you've done all that and your number still shows as private, the issue is probably between your phone and your carrier network. You can try resetting your network settings completely. On Android go to Settings > System > Reset options > Reset mobile network settings. On iPhone it's Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset Network Settings. Also worth checking if privacy apps like Truecaller have permissions that might be hiding your number, or if your SIM is really old it might not play well with newer networks.
Basically, how to remove my number from private usually comes down to either a carrier setting you didn't know about or something blocking it in your phone's security settings. Start with the caller ID toggle, try those USSD codes if needed, and if nothing works, do a network reset. That usually fixes it.
