Just down a rabbit hole about the most expensive purse in the world and honestly? The numbers are absolutely wild.
So apparently Elizabeth Taylor had this gold and diamond evening bag that sold for $218,500 at Christie's back in 2011. Like, that's just the starting point.
Chanel's been going hard in this space too. They've got this Diamond Forever bag with literal 334 diamonds on the clasp - not exaggerating, that's an actual number. Sold for $261,000 at an amfAR charity auction. Then there's their Elongated Classic Flap Clutch that was listed for $300,000. It's basically just black lambskin and barely holds anything, but apparently that's the appeal?
But here's where it gets actually insane. Hermès made this collaboration with a Japanese jeweler called Ginza Tanaka and created a Birkin bag with 2,182 diamonds embedded into it. The price tag? $1.9 million. Like, that's supercar money for a bag you carry on your shoulder.
There's also this Faubourg Birkin that goes for around $400,000, and Li Bingbing - the Chinese actress - had a custom Lana Marks Cleopatra clutch made with her name in pink gold and pink diamonds for the same price.
I genuinely don't understand the economics here, but I guess when you're that wealthy, a handbag becomes less about function and more about owning a piece of art. Still can't wrap my head around spending nearly $2 million on something you put your phone in, but apparently that's a thing in the ultra-luxury world.
