She was once considered the Queen of Science, but you may have never heard of Mary Somerville* 🧪

The Scottish woman achieved an impressive feat in the 19th century: translating scientific works and writing a book covering various fields of science, explaining the most complicated parts of physics, chemistry, and astronomy in a simple way.

Even more impressive was her self-taught scientific education, in a less encouraging context. During Mary’s adolescence, her parents, afraid she would "end up in a straightjacket," even took away the candle in her room to prevent her from reading at night. In the dark, Mary mentally reviewed the first six books of Euclid until she felt she knew them by heart.
