Apple’s N50 smart eyeglass prototype details under testing have been leaked, and it’s seen as a direct matchup against the smart eyeglass lineup that Meta and Ray-Ban are set to launch, meaning the smart eyeglass market has officially entered a “big-takeover showdown” phase.
According to a report from overseas media, Apple has recently been testing a smart eyeglass prototype codenamed “N50.” The first time four different design versions have been revealed, and the prototype uses multi-color acetate material and a vertically arranged oval lens module. The product is expected to make its official debut at the end of 2026, and then roll out to the consumer market in 2027—showing that Apple is moving away from the thicker AR headsets of the past and toward a lighter eyeglass form factor that’s closer to everyday use.
From headsets to everyday accessories, the iPhone ecosystem is at the core
The biggest change in this N50 prototype lies in the product’s positioning. Unlike past mixed-reality devices that emphasized immersive experiences, Apple is clearly putting its focus on “everyday wearable” smart eyeglasses, and stressing deep integration with the iPhone.
In the market’s view, if the voice assistant Siri is upgraded in parallel, N50 could become the entry device for real-time reminders, navigation, and information lookups, further replacing some phone use scenarios—such as message replies, schedule reminders, and simple searches. This kind of product strategy also suggests that Apple is trying to turn smart eyeglasses from a “tech toy” into a “daily necessity.”
Four designs, multiple materials, Apple N50 strengthens its fashion appeal
Based on the prototype currently revealed, Apple is testing four different eyeglass frame designs, and introducing multiple colors and material variations to strengthen the product’s fashion attributes. Using acetate material suggests the product will move toward a higher-end retail positioning, and aims to better align with the traditional eyewear market.
In addition, the vertically arranged oval lens module is also seen as a major highlight of this design. Supply-chain observers noted that this design may help simplify the module structure, but it also means Apple is trying to strike a balance between appearance and functionality.
Meta validates the market—Apple wants to take over
At present, the closest “success case” in the market is Meta’s smart eyeglass products launched with Ray-Ban. This lineup emphasizes taking photos, recording video, live streaming, and voice interactions. It has successfully brought smart eyeglasses from a niche tech-geek product into the mainstream consumer market, establishing the first wave of usage habits.
But in essence, these kinds of products still lean toward “functional accessories,” with use cases concentrated in content creation and community sharing.
Apple’s N50, however, is clearly taking a different path. Based on current information, Apple doesn’t intend to make “just glasses that can take photos.” Instead, it aims to turn smart eyeglasses into an extension interface for the iPhone—integrating notifications, navigation, a voice assistant, and everyday information into the wearing experience.
Design language showdown: technology vs. fashion
In terms of product design, both sides are also showing clear differences. Meta chose to collaborate with Ray-Ban, directly borrowing a mature eyewear brand and classic frame styles, lowering the psychological barrier for users and quickly entering the market.
Apple, meanwhile, is building its design language from scratch. N50 is testing four frame styles and introducing multi-color acetate material and a vertically arranged oval lens module, clearly hoping to establish its own look rather than relying on existing brands.
AI is the real battleground: Siri vs Meta AI
The real deciding factor isn’t the frame or the lens—it’s AI. Meta has already integrated its own AI assistant into its eyeglasses, strengthening voice interaction and real-time recognition capabilities, giving the device basic “companion-type AI” functionality.
Apple’s advantage, however, lies in ecosystem integration. If Siri can truly evolve, and work seamlessly with iPhone, AirPods, and Apple Watch, then N50 could have the potential to become an “always-on personal assistant.”
That would directly change the way people use it—from “picking up your phone to use AI” to “using AI just by looking up.”
