I've been experimenting with various verification code reception services lately and found there are quite a few pitfalls. Many times, when registering for overseas websites or testing APIs, a phone number is required. Buying new SIM cards is too cumbersome, so SMS reception platforms come in handy. Basically, it's renting a virtual phone number to receive verification codes, which protects privacy and makes testing easier.
I've used several platforms myself—some fail to receive messages, others have delays of half a day, so I've encountered quite a few issues. Later, I summarized a few good options. SMS-Activate is the most frequently used; verification codes usually arrive within 10 seconds, and it covers many countries. If you're mainly dealing with Chinese phone numbers, Super Cloud SMS and Little Bird SMS perform well—US numbers take about 10-30 seconds, Chinese numbers are even faster, typically 5-20 seconds. 5SIM also has a user-friendly interface, clear API documentation, and while Getsmscode is cheap, it can sometimes have delays.
When using these platforms, pay attention to a few details. Some numbers are shared, which can lead to them being used by others; if you encounter a risk control account, just switch to another. Verification codes can indeed be delayed, especially for less common countries or apps, so it's recommended to prepare several numbers as backups. Also, don't rely on virtual numbers as your long-term primary number—they can't guarantee privacy and security. When choosing a platform, don't just look at the price; opt for ones with good reputation and high activity.
If you're just testing APIs, any platform supporting API access will do. But if you need stable registration for a specific overseas website, my advice is to prepare multiple numbers so you can switch immediately if one becomes invalid. Some platforms even support one-click number switching, which is very practical. Based on my experience over this period, SMS-Activate and 5SIM are the most stable, with low latency and broad coverage.
