I've been experimenting with various overseas website accounts recently, and using virtual numbers to receive verification codes is essential. I've encountered many pitfalls before—some platforms simply don't receive texts, others have delays of half a day, but I eventually figured out how to choose the right ones. Basically, it's about finding a stable platform for receiving SMS verification codes that can deliver them quickly.
A few that I’ve used and found pretty good include SMS-Activate. This international platform is the fastest, usually delivering within 10 seconds, and covers many countries, making it especially suitable for testing overseas applications. For domestic needs, Super Cloud SMS and XiaoNiao receive codes quite stably—US numbers typically take 10-30 seconds, while domestic numbers are even faster, often within 5-20 seconds. 5SIM also has a user-friendly interface, clear API documentation, and I’ve successfully used it to register Google and Twitter accounts without issues. Getsmscode offers the lowest prices, but sometimes experiences delays, so it’s better suited for light use.
When using these Chinese virtual number platforms, there are a few pitfalls to avoid. Shared numbers can often be "already registered," and verification codes from less popular platforms might get stuck, so I usually buy several numbers as backups. If a number becomes invalid, switch immediately—don’t stubbornly stick with it. Some platforms support a "one-click number change" feature, which is very practical. Also, don’t use virtual numbers as your primary, long-term numbers—privacy and security are not guaranteed; they’re just for temporary use.
Overall, if you’re just testing APIs, any platform that supports API access will do. But if you want stable registration on a specific overseas site, it’s best to buy multiple numbers in advance, especially from reputable, active platforms. Based on my experience, SMS-Activate and 5SIM perform the best overall—low latency and strong platform stability.
