Let's understand what a memo is in crypto transactions because it's really important to know if you're working with certain assets.

A memo ( is also called a tag or an identifier) — it's essentially an additional code needed for some cryptocurrencies. It sounds complicated, but in practice, it's simple: a helper to identify your transaction on the exchange.

See, what's the catch? Some coins like XRP, XLM, or BNB are set up so that multiple users can use the same deposit address on the platform. To figure out who exactly to send the funds to, this very memo is added. Without it, the exchange simply won't be able to identify whose money it is.

When is it needed? When you transfer these assets to centralized platforms. XRP requires a mandatory tag, XLM also asks for a memo, and BNB on the BNB network also needs it. EOS uses a memo as the main identifier. If you send a transaction without this code, the funds will get stuck, and recovery will be a nightmare.

Where to find it? When you open a deposit on any major exchange and select, say, XRP, you'll see two things: the deposit address and a unique tag. For example, the address might be rEXAMPLEAddress123456, and the tag — 12345678. Both parts are critical.

When withdrawing from your account, you'll find a separate field to enter the memo. Even some mobile wallets like Trust Wallet will tell you whether you need to add this code.

Practical example: you want to send XRP between platforms. Open the deposit on the target exchange, copy the address and tag, go back to the original platform, and paste both pieces of information into the required fields — done.

What if you forget the memo? That's where trouble begins. The transaction will go through, but the platform won't understand who it's meant for. You'll have to contact support and hope they can help. The process is lengthy, and there's no guarantee.

So the simple rule is: if there's a field for the memo — definitely fill it out. It takes 10 seconds but will save you hours of back-and-forth with support. Especially with XRP, XLM, and BNB — you simply can't do without a memo.
