The evolution of Ethereum is an epic journey from a "geek toy" to a "Web3 operating system." From the perspective of 2026, it has shifted from "narrative-driven" rapid growth to a focus on "engineering-driven" infrastructure deepening.

1. Past: From the "World Computer" to the "Merge" Rebirth

Ethereum's history can be clearly divided into three eras:

Genesis and ICO Boom (2015-2017): Mainnet launched in 2015, Vitalik Buterin introduced smart contracts, upgrading blockchain from a "ledger" to a "programmable platform." Although the 2017 ICO bubble burst, it established its role as an ecosystem incubator.

2. Present: Engineering Challenges in 2026

As of April 2026, Ethereum is in a performance enhancement phase following the Pectra/Fusaka upgrades. The main focus is solving "usability" issues:

Scaling as the main theme: The 2024 Dencun upgrade (introducing Blob) significantly lowered costs for Layer 2 solutions (like Arbitrum, zkSync). The 2025 Pectra upgrade further optimized account abstraction. Currently, the mainnet (L1) is gradually evolving into a "security and settlement layer," with high-frequency trading moving to L2.

Governance institutionalization: Development cycles have shifted from "irregular hard forks" to a more engineering-oriented release schedule (similar to major software versions), reducing uncertainty for ecosystem developers.

RWA (Real-World Asset On-Chain): With improved compliance frameworks, the on-chain scale of traditional financial assets like government bonds and loans is surging. Ethereum is beginning to support institutional-level asset settlement needs.

3. Future: Five Major Roadmaps and the Ultimate Form

Vitalik's five-stage roadmap (The Merge, Surge, Verge, Purge, Splurge) is progressing in parallel, aiming for an ultimate scalability of over 100,000 TPS.

1. Near Future (2026-2027): Glamsterdam and Parallelization

Parallel execution: The upcoming Glamsterdam upgrade will introduce "block-level access lists," evolving Ethereum from "single-threaded" to "multi-lane" parallel processing, greatly increasing throughput.

Account abstraction adoption: Making smart contract wallets the default, eliminating the need for users to manually write down seed phrases, providing a Web2-like experience.

Quantum resistance: Initiating research and migration to post-quantum cryptography to safeguard trillions of dollars in assets.

2. Long-term Vision: Whole Chain (The Splurge)

Stateless clients: Using technologies like Verkle trees, nodes can verify transactions without storing full historical data, lowering node entry barriers while maintaining decentralization.

ZK (Zero-Knowledge) Layer: L1 validation will heavily rely on zero-knowledge proofs, allowing validators to verify proofs instead of re-executing transactions, greatly improving efficiency.

4. Identity Reimagined: From "Currency" to "Foundation"

Ethereum's positioning has undergone a fundamental shift:

Past: Aspiring to be the "world computer" for decentralization.

Now and Future: A global settlement layer + Web3 operating system. It no longer aims to process all transactions on a single chain but serves as a secure base for L2 and L3, supporting large-scale applications through modular division (L1 manages security, L2 manages speed).

Summary: Ethereum's past was about "dreaming," its present is about "building foundations," and its future is about "becoming invisible." It is shifting from a front-stage "application chain" to a behind-the-scenes infrastructure supporting the digital economy.
