The capacity of the Bitcoin Lightning Network reaches a new all-time high

The Bitcoin Lightning Network capacity has reached a new all-time high, surpassing 5,600 Bitcoins. Although the number of network nodes and channels is below the peak in 2022, the addition of more Bitcoins has accelerated transaction speeds and reduced costs, significantly improving the overall efficiency of the network.

ChainCatcher reports that, according to Cointelegraph, as major crypto exchanges have widely adopted it and its features have continued to be optimized, the Bitcoin Layer2 network—Lightning Network—has reached a historic capacity high.

Data from Bitcoin Visuals shows that the Lightning Network’s capacity has reached 5,606 BTC, breaking the record set in March 2023. Analytics platform Amboss also reported that the Lightning Network’s capacity hit a peak of 5,637 BTC, worth about $490 million. The data shows that after a year of capacity decline, the Lightning Network’s capacity surged in November and December, driven by more Bitcoin being added to the network—making transactions faster and costs lower.

At present, there are 14,940 Lightning Network nodes, down from the 20,700-node peak in March 2022; while the number of channels between nodes is 48,678, also below the peak in 2022. The data indicates that the amount of Bitcoin added to the Lightning Network is increasing, but usage measured by the number of nodes and channels does not necessarily grow accordingly.
