If you're getting SASSA grants, keeping your banking details and phone number current is basically non-negotiable—missed updates can mean delayed payments or worse. Here's what you actually need to know depending on your grant type.

For permanent grants like old age or disability, you can't just update online. You have to visit a SASSA office in person with your ID and recent bank statement (stamped, under 3 months old). Fill out the Payment Method Change Form, and they'll send it to your bank for verification—this takes up to 21 working days. Pro tip: submit before the 15th of the month if you want the change to kick in the next payment cycle. And heads up, SASSA won't pay into joint accounts or anything in someone else's name.

Changing your phone number for permanent grants? Same deal—call the helpline at 0800 60 10 11 or visit your local office. They'll walk you through it.

Now, if you're on the SRD R370 grant, it's way simpler. The whole thing's online through the official SASSA SRD portal. Enter your ID number, they send you an SMS link, click it, update your banking details and phone number. But watch out for fake websites—there are fraudsters out there pretending to help with SASSA changes. Stick to the official portal only.

One thing applies to both: if you're doing a cash transfer option, your phone number has to be RICA-registered. And remember, any account you add has to be in your name exactly as it appears on your ID. If the online process gets messy, just call SASSA directly or swing by an office—sometimes that's actually faster than troubleshooting the portal.
