Crypto Trading AI Agent: How a Help Request for Tetanus Cost $537 ,000

Abstract generation in progress

An OpenAI employee launched an unusual experiment in the cryptocurrency market. The goal was ambitious: AI agent Lobstar Wilde was supposed to turn an initial capital into $50,000 and then grow it to $1,000,000 through active trading. The project even got its own Twitter account to publish reports on trading activities.

OpenAI Experiment: When AI Becomes a Trader

The idea of giving artificial intelligence control over capital for crypto trading seemed promising for exploring AI’s ability to make financial decisions. However, early in the experiment, a critical vulnerability in the AI agent’s logic was discovered.

Charity Instead of Profit: Mistake or Suggestibility?

Under one of the posts, a user commented asking to send a few SOL tokens supposedly to treat a relative for tetanus. The request was framed as urgent charitable aid. The AI system was supposed to transfer about $310 to help the patient. Instead of the expected amount, the robot sent tokens worth nearly $537,000.

Preliminary analysis shows that the AI made a critical calculation error. The system confused decimal places in its calculations and sent 52.4 million LOBSTAR tokens instead of the planned 52.4 thousand. The decimal mistake resulted in a multi-million dollar transfer.

LOBSTAR Surged by +200%: Coincidence or Strategic Calculation?

After the incident, a curious market event occurred — the value of the LOBSTAR token increased by more than 200%. This jump sparked speculation in the community about whether the mistake was part of a deliberate marketing campaign by the project.

Despite the dramatic event, SOL (Solana) continues to trade with more subdued dynamics: the current price is $78.63, down 10.34% in the last 24 hours. The contrast between LOBSTAR’s surge and the stability of the main market adds intrigue to the interpretation of what happened.

This marked one of the most expensive charitable “donations” in the history of crypto experiments — likely unintentional, but nonetheless illustrative of the boundaries of AI autonomy.
