Can Ethereum in 2026 regain its sovereignty? Buterin sketches a new blueprint for privacy and security

Abstract generation in progress

【BitPush】Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin recently shared a thought-provoking view on social media: 2026 will be a pivotal moment for Ethereum to reverse its situation in self-sovereignty and trustlessness.

His plans are ambitious. By introducing ZK-EVM and BAL technologies, Ethereum will significantly lower the barrier to node operation, allowing more people to independently participate in network validation. Meanwhile, after the launch of the Helios validation system, RPC data will become more trustworthy, and users will no longer need to blindly trust third-party service providers.

Privacy protection has also been emphasized. The application of ORAM and PIR technologies means users’ on-chain activities will gain better privacy shields, and transaction details will no longer be transparent and visible. Additionally, the launch of social recovery wallets and time lock mechanisms adds new lines of defense for fund security—even if private keys are lost, users can regain control through social networks.

Buterin also mentioned improvements to on-chain UI and IPFS applications. These seemingly minor optimizations are actually driving the entire ecosystem toward greater decentralization.

He candidly admits that Ethereum has made compromises in certain areas over the past decade. Node operation has become complex, applications rely on centralized services, and data privacy has been neglected—these issues have surfaced. The future path is to correct these compromises and return to Ethereum’s core values. Although this will be a long process, once completed, the entire ecosystem will become more robust and truly decentralized.

Haha, it's Vitalik's pie-in-the-sky moment again... Can it be achieved by 2026 this time? Honestly, it's a bit uncertain. Wait, social recovery wallets? Is that really reliable? Seems riskier. Lowering the barrier with ZK-EVM is a good thing, but how many people are running nodes now... I just want to ask. Privacy is the most critical issue. Finally, someone is addressing this problem. Running naked on the chain every day is too uncomfortable. Few of the previous promises have been realized, and this time the hype is so intense... I'll just wait and see. Social network private key recovery? What if all my friends run away... That logic doesn't add up. No matter how good it sounds, we have to wait until 2026. Listening to stories now is just pointless.

They're making empty promises again... 2026 is still far away; let's first solve the current problems.

It's another 2026 Bitcoin... Is Vitalik really serious this time or just hyping it up again? ZK-EVM and BAL sound pretty impressive, but privacy definitely needs to be addressed. Honestly, the trust issue with RPC should have been solved long ago. It's so annoying to be constantly bottlenecked by centralized service providers. The social recovery wallet sounds good, but I wonder if it will end up being centralized by some big capital... Let's wait and see.

It's already 2026 again. Is V God really planning to do something big this time or just making empty promises... How long have we been hearing about ZK-EVM? The talk about trustlessness and self-sovereignty has become tiresome, but the key is whether it can actually be implemented. The social recovery wallet sounds pretty good, much better than my current daily anxiety about losing keys. I'm a bit期待about the privacy barrier; after all, having no oversight on the chain is indeed quite uncomfortable. But honestly, can all these things really be fully rolled out by 2026? I remain skeptical... but I also hope they can pull it off.
