Through Web3, I’ve met many like-minded friends, and with the New Year approaching, I plan to send them some tokens as a gesture of goodwill. It’s a good thing in theory, but I got stuck when choosing the transfer method.

I wanted to use a bank app, but I have to be cautious about my balance and transaction history being monitored; using a wallet for transfers is even more heartbreaking—transfer amounts and remaining balances are all visible on the chain, just like running naked on the street, anyone can peek at my financial secrets. This boundary is really uncomfortable.

On one side, there are privacy concerns, and on the other, the transparent mechanism of Web3. How can we balance the two? There’s still a lot of room for development in on-chain privacy protection.

This is the dilemma of Web3. If you want freedom, you have to pay the price of privacy. --- Haha, transfer records are visible across the entire network. I'm really speechless, it feels like posting a paycheck on social media. --- Privacy agreements should have been updated long ago. It's indeed a bit awkward now. --- So, we still have to wait for the zk solutions to mature, otherwise we'll really be running naked. --- Understanding this feeling, it's either trust issues or privacy issues, and they can never be solved at the same time. --- For private things, just do P2P directly. This pain point really hits home; privacy and transparency are indeed hard to achieve simultaneously. On-chain privacy still depends on technological upgrades; right now, it's like showing oneself naked. What to do? Do we have to secretly transfer red envelopes during the New Year? Poor privacy protection means Web3 is just pseudo-decentralized. In fact, mixer solutions are also quite helpless; they feel like treating the symptoms rather than the root cause. This is the real issue Web3 should address, more practical than the ups and downs of coin prices.

On-chain privacy is always a hot topic, but only when you actually use it do you realize how uncomfortable it can be. What to do? Use privacy coins like Monero? But others might not accept them. It's really a matter of fish and bear's paw—if you choose the convenience of Web3, you have to accept being seen through; if you truly want privacy, don't put it on the chain. For small things like transferring money to friends, is it really worth so much trouble? Just meet up in person. Privacy protection needs to keep up, or else it will eventually become a hunting ground for scammers.

This is the dilemma of Web3, the fish and the bear's paw. Want to learn about privacy coins? Monero and that bunch of stuff. Why does on-chain privacy always seem to be the last feature to be prioritized? I really don’t dare to transfer too much, who knows who’s watching the chain. Actually, it’s not that scary, there are plenty of big players, no one is specifically watching you. When will protocol-level privacy become standard? Hah, this is the eternal contradiction between centralization and decentralization. Just use a privacy pool to mix, but the fees are insanely high. How to put it, transparency is a feature but also a curse. A better on-chain privacy solution should have been available long ago.
