Gate 2025 Year-End Community Celebration January 8th, Chainalysis released a research report showing that in 2025, tracking of national activities in the cryptocurrency field has significantly increased. Illegal organizations are now operating large-scale on-chain infrastructure to facilitate transnational crime networks in obtaining goods and services, laundering their illegal proceeds through cryptocurrencies. Additionally, stablecoins dominate illegal transactions, accounting for 84% of all illegal transaction volume.
Data indicates that illegal cryptocurrency transactions in 2025 reached at least $154 billion. This is a 162% increase from the previous year, mainly due to a 694% surge in the amount received by sanctioned entities. However, even if the amount received by sanctioned entities remains flat compared to last year, 2025 will still be a record-breaking year for cryptocurrency crime, as activity in most illegal crime categories has increased.
