Saw a piece of news—foreigners really are easy to scam.
A woman in San Jose, California lost nearly $1 million in a cryptocurrency "pig butchering" scam and only realized it was a scam after consulting ChatGPT.
The victim, Margaret Loke, met a man calling himself "Ed" on Facebook this May. He claimed to be a wealthy businessman and gradually built an emotional connection with her. "Ed" then guided her to invest in cryptocurrency. Loke transferred over $490,000 from her retirement account, and then took out a second mortgage on her house to transfer another $300,000.
When the so-called crypto account was suddenly "frozen," "Ed" demanded an additional $1 million to unfreeze the funds. Loke described the situation to ChatGPT, which responded that the setup matched known scam patterns and advised her to contact the police. Investigations showed the funds were transferred to a Malaysian bank account and withdrawn by the scammer.
