Multiple Iranian media outlets confirmed on the 1st that Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei was killed in attacks by the United States and Israel against Iran. Khamenei “died while on duty at the Leader’s Office.” Iranian media reported that he was performing his duties at the time. The attacks on Khamenei by the U.S. and Israel occurred earlier on February 28. Previously, some media outlets linked to Israel repeatedly claimed that Khamenei was living in a secret safe location due to “fear of assassination.” Iranian media stated, “He died while on duty, once again proving these claims are pure lies and part of enemy psychological warfare.” Iranian media also quoted Khamenei’s words before his death: “When people are under shellfire, why should my family and I hide in a shelter?” The Iranian government announced a 40-day period of national mourning. Earlier on the 1st, the Iranian Fars News Agency, citing sources close to the Supreme Leader’s office, reported that four relatives, including Khamenei’s daughter and son-in-law, were killed. U.S. President Donald Trump posted on social media on February 28, claiming that Khamenei “is dead,” and stated that the U.S. and Israel’s bombing of Iran would continue. (Xinhua)
