JPMorgan launches its stablecoin JPM Coin directly on the Canton network with institutional privacy

JPMorgan’s blockchain unit, Kinexys, together with Digital Asset, has announced a significant milestone in enterprise adoption of digital money: the native issuance of JPM Coin (JPMD), their US dollar-backed stablecoin, directly on the Canton Network. This move marks a turning point in how financial institutions adopt tokenized assets and decentralized clearing infrastructures.

Canton Network: the private blockchain platform designed for financial markets

The Canton Network emerges as the preferred solution for institutions conducting synchronized real-time transactions. Unlike other public blockchains, this network is specifically optimized for privacy and configured for professional financial market operations. The recent selection of Canton Network by the Depository Trust & Clearing Corporation (DTCC)—the leading entity in U.S. securities market infrastructure—validates the platform’s technical approach.

Financial institutions have already demonstrated Canton’s viability through practical operations. Notably, they have used tokenized assets to settle U.S. Treasury bonds outside traditional market hours, showcasing the potential of blockchain networks to create truly continuous and synchronized markets.

JPM Coin: the stablecoin connecting traditional finance and digital intermediation

JPM Coin represents an evolution in JPMorgan’s digital strategy. Unlike other stablecoins on the market, JPMD is a deposit in US dollars held directly on JPMorgan’s books, not a secondary tokenized representation. This gives the stablecoin a unique feature: it is regulated, verifiable money that institutional clients can use for payments within distributed ledger systems.

By issuing JPMD directly on Canton, both companies expand the availability of interoperable digital money that can be transferred, settled, and re-integrated within a secure, synchronized ecosystem compliant with regulations. Yuval Rooz, co-founder and CEO of Digital Asset, highlighted that this collaboration offers “regulated digital money that moves at market speed,” describing the stablecoin’s ability to facilitate near-instant settlements without sacrificing compliance or privacy.

Institutional efficiency and real-time liquidity unlocking

Naveen Mallela, co-CEO of Kinexys, emphasized that integrating JPM Coin into Canton will significantly increase operational efficiency and unlock liquidity through nearly instant blockchain transactions. The stablecoin, operating on a network designed for privacy, allows institutions to settle positions without publicly exposing sensitive operational data.

Implementation roadmap and ecosystem expansion

The integration will be rolled out in phases throughout 2026. The initial focus is on establishing technical and commercial frameworks to support the almost instant issuance, transfer, and redemption of JPM Coin on the Canton Network. Subsequently, the collaboration will explore integrating additional Kinexys Digital Payments products, such as Blockchain Deposit Accounts, thereby expanding the digital service ecosystem on Canton’s infrastructure.

The Canton Network, governed by the Canton Foundation with participation from global financial institutions, represents an alternative model to conventional public blockchains, prioritizing selective transparency, regulatory compliance, and synchronized settlement across multiple asset classes over shared infrastructure. This agreement between JPMorgan and Digital Asset underscores the consolidation of institutional stablecoins as a core component of modern financial infrastructure.
