My sister just bought a new sports car. Her previous Mercedes-Benz C-Class had her cousin drooling, and he directly offered 150,000 to take it over.

When Dad heard, he immediately said, “This car is worth at least 200,000.” The cousin's face fell, and he left angrily.
A few days later, Dad sold the car to someone else for 250,000. Then he called my sister over and said, “Give your cousin 50,000.”
My sister looked confused: “Dad, what does that mean? I sold it for 250,000 and made a profit. He only offered 150,000, so I didn’t lose anything, right?”
Dad calmly explained:
“He offered 150,000 because he was trying to get a bargain. If you actually sell it to him, he’ll just think you’re taking advantage of him, and it’ll be awkward every time they meet.
Now that the car sold for 250,000, he’ll realize the car is truly worth that—he missed out, and he’ll have to accept the real value.
If you give him an extra 50,000, he’ll have enough to buy a new car outright. It might seem like you’re losing 50,000 on the surface, but in reality, you’re still getting 200,000.
But more importantly: he’ll owe you a favor.
That favor is worth way more than 50,000 in cash. The next time he sees you or thinks about this, he’ll automatically feel a little more fond of you—an unpaid debt that sticks with him.
This is about using money to buy influence, not just money to buy goodwill.”
My sister was silent for a long time after hearing this, and finally she said, “Dad, your brain… is just too good at calculating.”
(From a long-term perspective: don’t always focus on the small profit margin. When you broaden your horizon, emotional debts are the heaviest compound interest.)
