U.S. Trade Judge Richard Eaton Warns Trump Administration's Appeal Could Disrupt $85B Refund System

On June 3, U.S. trade judge Richard Eaton publicly responded to the Trump administration's appeal of his ruling ordering a refund of $166 billion in tariffs previously deemed illegal by the Supreme Court. In an open letter, the judge criticized the government's filing as having "fancy" language and questioned its legal arguments. Eaton warned that if the Department of Justice successfully requests the appeals court to intervene immediately, it could adversely affect the ongoing online refund system, which has processed at least $85 billion in refunds to date.
