Stanford PhD Weijie Su Joins OpenAI for Model Training, Promoted to Full Professor at Wharton

Weijie Su, a Penn Wharton Full Professor and COPSS Presidents' Award winner in 2026, announced on X that he has joined OpenAI while on sabbatical, focusing on AI model training. Su, a Beijing University mathematics alumnus and Stanford statistics PhD, earned promotion to Full Professor at the Department of Statistics and Data Science at Penn Wharton after a decade of academic research. According to his X announcement monitored by Beating, Su returns to the Bay Area after ten years to contribute to OpenAI's model development. The COPSS award recognizes his exceptional contributions to statistical foundations of generative AI, including LLM watermarking mechanisms, human preference alignment, and pioneering work on differential privacy in the 2020 U.S. Census, as well as advances in deep learning theory and high-dimensional statistical inference.
