OpenAI Gets US Clearance for GPT-5.6 Broad Release This Week

According to Axios, OpenAI received clearance from the US Department of Commerce this week to broadly release GPT-5.6 following additional testing and official meetings. The approval aligns with Executive Order 14409 issued on June 2, which establishes a voluntary prerelease framework for frontier AI models. The framework permits up to 30 days of government access and early releases to trusted partners without requiring mandatory licensing or preclearance. The Commerce Department's Center for AI Standards and Innovation, created June 4, 2025, evaluates model capabilities and serves as the primary government contact for AI companies.
