According to Bloomberg, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang met with multiple U.S. lawmakers and Commerce Secretary Lütnik on Wednesday (July 29) to advocate against restrictions on open-weight AI models. Following talks with Democratic Senators Mark Warner and Adam Schiff, Huang emphasized that open-weight models are essential for both AI safety and industry vitality, arguing they are critical to maintaining U.S. competitive advantage.
This push coincides with coordinated efforts from major tech firms. Last week, Huang joined Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella and dozens of technology companies in issuing an open letter urging the government not to restrict open-weight model development. On Monday, Nvidia partnered with Microsoft, Palantir, and Salesforce to release a joint statement highlighting how open-weight models enhance cybersecurity capabilities and prevent AI concentration among closed-system providers.
