After India's government warned Wednesday that Meta's WhatsApp username feature could fuel cybercrime, the U.S. tech company defended the new capability. A Meta spokesman said users must still link a phone number to use WhatsApp and that the platform has built multiple safeguards into the username feature to prevent fraud. Meta said it will limit how many new users a single account can contact, block repeated username guessing attempts, and deploy systems to detect and remove accounts exhibiting common impersonation or abuse patterns.
