According to Nikkei, Japanese convenience store operator Lawson will launch a pilot program testing JPYC stablecoin payments starting in early August at its Takanawa Gateway City store in Tokyo's Minato Ward. The company will partner with digital asset wallet provider Hashport to enable customers to pay through smartphone wallets via point-of-sale terminal integration.
The pilot marks Japan's first direct integration of stablecoin payments with a POS system, allowing Lawson to manage purchase data, product quantity, payment timing, and transaction details within its existing store infrastructure. Lawson plans to evaluate the stability of the POS integration and payment completion time before deciding on broader expansion.
