Kevin Kelly Says Open-Source AI Models Give China Edge If Token Costs Become Critical

TOKEN0.57%
According to Kevin Kelly at the 2026 World AI Conference on July 18, open-source AI models could provide China with a significant competitive advantage if token consumption costs become a priority for users. Kelly noted that while the industry currently overlooks token costs, he expects users to demand efficiency as token consumption scales. "If you can provide a solution at one-tenth of Anthropic's cost, it would reshape the landscape," Kelly stated. He cautioned, however, that maintaining open-source models requires substantial funding, as they lack the revenue model of proprietary systems.
