According to a report by The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) on April 30, Amazon is internally discussing restarting the reality competition show The Apprentice, which was previously hosted by U.S. President Donald Trump, with the potential platform being its Prime Video streaming service; if the show is approved, consideration is being given to having Trump’s eldest son, Donald Trump Jr., serve as the host.
In a statement provided by an Amazon spokesperson to The Wall Street Journal, the spokesperson said: “Since we acquired MGM, we’ve had preliminary internal discussions about the future of The Apprentice as an asset, and we’ve stopped there.”
A source at Variety also confirmed that the show is currently “not in development,” and that Amazon has not discussed producing a reboot version with anyone outside the company. The Wall Street Journal report noted that Mike Hopkins, the head of Amazon MGM Studios, and other Amazon executives were involved in the related internal discussions; some sources said the discussions began around the time Trump was sworn in for his second term.
Based on the background reported by The Wall Street Journal, in January this year Amazon released the documentary Melania, directed by Brett Ratner, on Prime Video. According to the report, although the film was criticized by reviewers, its domestic premiere box office reached $7 million, breaking the best opening for a nonfiction feature in more than a decade.
According to The Wall Street Journal report, The Apprentice was hosted by Trump and he served as executive producer; from 2004 to 2015, it aired 186 episodes, received nine Emmy Award nominations, and spawned multiple spin-off shows. In a 2024 interview with Variety co-editor in chief Ramin Setoodeh, Trump revealed that after he announced he was running in 2015, he told NBC that Ivanka Trump was his first choice to replace the host.
Based on the Amazon spokesperson’s statement provided to The Wall Street Journal and Variety’s confirmation, the related plan is still only “preliminary internal discussions.” The show is currently “not in development,” and Amazon has also not held discussions with the Trump family or with anyone outside the company.
