German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said he would not advise his children to work in the United States, citing the country’s current “social atmosphere.” Speaking to a group of Roman Catholics in Würzburg, Merz stated, “I admire America, but my admiration has not increased. I would not advise my children to study or work in the United States.” His criticism of the White House prompted U.S. President Donald Trump to threaten higher tariffs on European automakers and announced plans to reduce the number of U.S. troops stationed in Germany.
