According to a regular press briefing held by China's Taiwan Affairs Office on May 20, a spokesperson responded to Lai Ching-te's May 17 Facebook post, in which the Taiwan leader claimed that Taiwan is a defender of peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait and the broader region, while blaming mainland China as the source of instability. The office's response criticized Lai's rhetoric, stating it exposed his true character. Lai also reiterated the "two sides are not subordinate to each other" position in his statement.
