ByteDance Tops Microsoft's AI Clients With Over $1B Annual Spending

According to Bloomberg, ByteDance has become Microsoft's largest AI customer, with annual spending on Microsoft AI and cloud services expected to exceed $1 billion in 2025. Alibaba, Meituan, and Tencent are also major buyers of Microsoft Azure cloud services.

Microsoft's AI business in China is growing rapidly. The company's Azure AI revenue in China achieved the fastest growth rate globally, expanding 400% in the 2024 fiscal year and tripling in 2025. However, OpenAI has privately expressed concern that Microsoft has not taken sufficient measures to prevent Chinese customers from using distillation techniques to replicate its models.
