Burnham Seeks to Use Flexibility Within UK Fiscal Rules for Next Budget on July 20

According to Jin10, on July 20, newly appointed UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham stated he will seek to leverage flexibility within existing UK fiscal rules to support the next budget. When asked whether he would increase borrowing for infrastructure investment, Burnham said, "I have stated we will comply with the fiscal rules—the existing fiscal rules—and will use all flexibility within the rules allowed." He added, "This is not about taking risks with the UK economy. I have never done so in any position I have held." Burnham pledged to "clearly identify funding sources and set out financing arrangements clearly in the budget."
